Playing with technology

I've decided that it is time to improve my skills and embrace some of this amazing technology that is available to us. In particular I have been playing with some photo applications for my new Android phone.

Whilst a tad frustrating to begin with, I am hoping that this frustration is the small price I have to pay to do things better and quicker. Surely this will mean less time on the computer and more time with needle and thread in hand. Well that is the plan for 2012 anyway.

So in keeping with this plan I have put together a few images of my new pattern collection which will be released for sale on the Stitching Cow website over the next few weeks. They will be available as both paper patterns and also as e-patterns (electronic patterns that can be downloaded instantly).

Unfortunately I only had a few photos on my phone to play with but you will get the idea of what this great little application can do.

I still need to work out how to send photos to my blog directly without losing picture quality. At present the program seems to shrink the photo so that it is too small. Perhaps I need a lesson with my teenage son. Anyway I will keep persevering and hopefully you will be able to see and enjoy my progress throughout the year.

Wholesale Trade Fair

At the end of last year, Little Green Cottage had its first display stand at Melbourne's Wholesale and Trade Fair. This is an opportunity for designers and fabric distributors to showcase their new items.

There was a lost of frantic activity during the lead up and out of "the dust" emerged ten new designs which will be launched in 2012.

I am very pleased to report that the event proved very successful and it was wonderful meeting patchwork and quilting retailers from all over Australia.I thought I would share with you some pics of the event .
Here are two of out display areas.

Christmas in Italy was also on display and generated a lot of buzz.

Making peach jam

This weekend I was on watering duty for a dear friend who is holidaying with family. This involved checking the chooks and watering the orchard and large vege patch.
In exchange I received a glorious bounty of eggs, strawberries and peaches.

The smell in the kitchen was divine and I felt just like Martha B Rabbit in the book "The Fairies Cook" as I made jam. This was one of Miss 18s favourite books when she was little. Now, just like Martha, I have my pantry stocked for winter.

The recipe included cinnamon and mixed spice, which I have to admit concerned me a little. But I went with it and I am pleased to say the jam is yummy! I tried to find the recipe today so that I could link to it but do you think I can find it again. It was online one minute and seems to be now gone!!!

All I need to do is add some labels, which will be a good job for Miss 12 who is trying to get out of cleaning up here bedroom. Then into the pantry they go.

I am on watering duty again on Wednesday, hope the zucchinis are big enough to pick!

Sounds like a plan

It's so refreshing to think of a new year as a clean slate. I've cleaned off my big dry erase board in my studio and I'm ready to start filling it up with hopes and dreams for the year ahead.

Just came across this and thought it a wonderful idea. Instead of pondering what I could have...should have done in 2010, why not just wipe the slate clean and look forward with excitement to 2012. No more beating myself up about unfinished projects, unwritten articles or my lack of blogging.
There's no point is there?

Jack and Jill Wall Hanging in Creating Country Threads Magazine

Yesterday afternoon on my way to do the school pick up, I noticed this month's issue of Creating Country Threads peeking out of my mailbox. I was even more excited than usual because my Jack and Jill wall hanging features on page 20.

Here it is nestled amongst the wisteria.

This project has been specially designed to compliment my Nursery Rhyme quilt which would make a wonderful set for any child or grandchild.

New Designs for Wholesale Trade Fair in Melbourne

The countdown is now on! I have only a few weeks before launching a new collection of patterns at the Wholesale Trade Fair in Melbourne.

This will be the first time that Little Green Cottage has made an appearance at the Trade Fair and to be honest I am feeling a tad nervous. Janice (my new helping angel) will be attending as well. We have both been super busy sorting out our display for the stand. There's still lots to do, including a few more projects to make, but we are gradually crossing off our "to do list".

I thought I would show you a glimpse of the new collection. It has a Japanese flavor to it and of course there is lots of embroidery and applique. I can't reveal too much at this stage but here is a peek!

I have designed a series of projects to compliment my block of the month quilt pattern Christmas in Italy (which will be on display at the Trade Fair). I'll post a few pics of those next week. Camping Trip Bay of Fires Tasmania

Recently the family and I traveled to the East Coast of Tasmania to a very special place called the Bay of Fires. Truth is hubby and the kids journed there last year and I stayed at home and sewed all weekend. They had such a remarkable time that they convinced me that I had to come this year, ever though it meant no shower for 3 days, and sleeping on the ground in a tent.

Hubby was very excited when we pulled up and discovered that the campsite they stayed in last year was free. He motioned to a small walking track amongst the tress and instructed that we start hauling our gear in that direction. As the trees cleared I was lost for words. This is what I saw.

Hubby must have heard my gasp and proudly exclaimed "See I told you so".

This was the most beautiful camp site that I had ever seen, and we had the place to ourselves.
Here is out campsite taken from the opposite direction.You can just see our tents nestled amongst the trees.

The kids were able to paddle in the lagoon and walking along the beach was pure bliss.

The Bay of Fires is most famous for its stunning white beaches and rocks which are covered in a natural Lichen.You will soon see what I mean when you look at the photos.

Here are the kids scrambling over the rocks and if you look very carefully one of them is standing on the large rock in the distance.They are just a small speck!

Here is Miss Eleven on a rock being King of the World!.

But the photo that says it all was captured by Tony (the Dad of the family that came with us). After returning from a day of bush walking and discovered waterfalls we were greeted with this stunning sunset which lasted about 10 minutes. Isn't it amazing!

Hope you have enjoyed seeing a bit of Tasmania, it is an amazing place to live and I feel very grateful.

How exciting, my doll Miss Daisy is in this month's issue of Creating Country Threads magazine. You can see her on the front cover, top left.
It is the magazine's 10th birthday so they have lots of wonderful projects for you to enjoy.

Miss Daisy is lots of fun to make. She has cute little brown shoes and her dress is decorated with mauve daises made from wool felt and then appliqued in place with simple embroidery. So check out your local newsagent and grab your copy.

New project for Creating Country Threads Magazine

This week the needle and thread have been particularly busy making a new project for Creating Country Threads Magazine. The lovely Danielle requested a wall hanging to compliment my Nursery Rhyme quilt
and as always I was keen to accommodate.

There was one Nursery Rhyme that came to mind straight away. In fact an image of the design can to me one night before going to sleep, thankfully the next morning I could still recall it and sketched it roughly into my sketch book.

From a pile of fabrics, some shapes emerged.

Ready to enjoy new Christmas in Italy Quilt

Here it is, a full photo of my new Christmas in Italy Quilt. For weeks I have been sharing with you the inspiration for this quilt which came from spending last Christmas in Italy. Nestled amongst snow laden hills this little village is a delight to create.

This original, new quilt design incorporates needle turn applique and hand embroidery, although could easily be adapted to other applique techniques. It is made up of 10 patterns which will take you through making this quilt step by step.
I have put together a video presentation which showcases some of the detail included in this quilt. You can watch the video now by heading over to Stitching Cow, the video is included on the home page at the bottom of the page.

New Christmas in Italy Quilt 5

My trip to Italy was full of inspiration. Attention to detail and pattern was everywhere, even on the ground!
So when coming up with some inspiration for the borders of my new Christmas in Italy quilt, I did not have to look very far.

Thankfully I had thought to point the camera down occasionally which I am sure must have amused the locals. This was a little tricky and I remember having to be very patient for just the right opportunity so that I did not get just an assortment of shoes. Although being in Italy, this would have probably made a very lovely photo...gosh they wear beautiful shoes!!!!

Here are some of the amazing geometric patterns I discovered:
These were taken in Vatican City.

These were in Milan, even the drain waste amazed me cigarette buts and all!

Our Villa in Como Lake also had the most stunning tiled floors.

Including some geometric blocks in my quilt was a must. Here's what I came up with. I did intend to template piece these blocks by hand, but decided to practice my foundation piecing skills on the sewing machine instead. The blocks are only 4" square so foundation was a much better option.

New Christmas in Italy Quilt 4

Every Christmas quilt needs a Santa and my Christmas in Italy quilt was no exception. It seemed logical that he had to appear in the night sky above the little village I had just created, but this meant his whole team of Reindeer. This was going to be a challenge!

The style of the quilt was sophisticated, not at all comical, so having Santa and his Reindeer appear as if real was a must. And he had to be flying which meant a sled, and his Reindeer had to be flying as well so this meant movement.

No wonder I left this block until last!

I was not lucky enough to catch Santa on my camera whilst in Italy, so my inspiration had to come from elsewhere. After scanning through lots of pictures for ideas and after many sketches, my Santa block started to emerge.

I used a variegated, red embroidery thread and added some hand pieced stars for some extra festive fun.

Finally I was up to the borders and once again my inspiration turned to Italy.

It seems that no Italian city or village is complete without a red brick bell tower. They are often the first structure to be spotted high up on the hills, or looming from the centre of town. Once again their architectural styles varied although I knew one had to appear in my Christmas in Italy quilt.

Now there was only one thing left, and that would be Santa himself and his Reindeer!

New Christmas in Italy Quilt 3

Italy is known as the country of Churches and after visiting this amazing country it is not difficult to see why. Monasteries, Churches and Mother Mary greeted us around every turn. Even in the most unlikely places.
Here are a few of the amazing churches we found. All very different in their architectural style.

So naturally my Christmas in Italy quilt had to include a church, although finding inspirational elements that could be adapted to fabric and applique was not that easy. After much reminiscing, a Church in the city of Verona came to mind. Verona is the home of Romeo and Juliet and boasts the famous balcony.

One of the Churches I discovered was down near the river.

And this stunning Rose window and arched entrance found its way into the quilt as well.

The other discovery down by the river was this lovely lamp post, it reminded me of some I had seen on the shores of Lake Como as well.

Yes, into the quilt it must go.

Although mine is looking a bit older and on a lean!

Speaking of "on a lean", the leaning tower of Pisa did not make it into my Christmas in Italy quilt. But it would have been remiss of me not to include a red brick bell tower. More to come soon.

New Christmas in Italy Quilt 2

Our trip to Italy involved a house swap and we were blessed to exchange with a lovely family from Milano who also owned a villa at Como Lake. Nestled at the base of the Swiss Alps, Como lake was one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen. Normally bustling with tourists in Summer, Como Lake in the middle of winter was tranquil and at rest. The little village at the top of the lake where we stayed seemed asleep and hardly stirred as we explored its surroundings.

On one of our walks we discovered a small collection of old, stone houses on the side of a hill. They looked over the snow covered mountains and I pondered their history.

It's no wonder that as my Christmas in Italy Quilt evolved, these stone villas and rolling hills appeared. I found the perfect range of fabric for the look I was after.

My other delightful discovery whilst at the villa in Como Lake was in our back yard. The first morning we woke to snow falling from the heavens and as I drew back the curtains in the kitchen there was the most amazing tree laden with wonderful, orange persimmons.

So into the quilt it had to go as well as some of the balcony hanging gardens!

And then of course there were all the churches...but that's another story!

New Christmas in Italy Quilt

Last November my family and I were blessed to spend 8 weeks in Italy. The trip was a dream come true for me and something I had been planning for a few years. The experience of soaking up another country's culture was a wonderful experience and something we will all never forget.

One of our very special moments was experiencing a white Christmas, something very different for we Aussies who normally sweat in the heat of summer over an oven, or contend with seafood, salads and sand at the beach. Seeing snow fall from the heavens was something very new. And I will never forget the delightful squeals of excitement from Miss 10 as she looked up into the falling snow and exclaimed "It feels like fairies are dancing across my face".

For so many reasons I felt that my next project should be one inspired by my trip to Italy.

Truth is though it took me a while to get my Mojo back in full swing, but thankfully when the ideas started to flow I was soon on my happy way, sketching from images fresh in my mind.

A few months on, the quilt is now complete and I have a confession to make. I have not been very diligent in taking photos of my progress. So instead I have another idea.

Over the next few weeks I thought it would be fun to show you where my inspiration has come from. So I will include some photos of sections from the quilt and then show you some of the places and buildings that inspired their creation.

The overall concept for the quilt flashed into my mind as we were driving through farmland in the Northern part of Italy just outside of Venice. Red and terracotta brick farmhouses nestled amongst snow laden trees was a scene quite new to me. The colours were so pale and yet so beautiful. It was the trees that intrigued me the most, their delicate branches dusted with snow silhouetted against the sky. Hopefully you will get an idea of what I saw from these photos, taken from the inside of the car (it was too cold to wind down the window).

So including these trees within my design was a must. I discovered a variegated DMC thread that gave the perfect effect, doing all the creative work for me.

As you can see there's lots of little houses, hills dusted with snow and lots more to come...!

Stitch-a-Long Quilt project with Homespun Magazine

It's getting very exciting now because my new Stitch a Long quilt project for Homespun magazine is almost ready for release.So I have been cutting, folding, ironing and playing with all the gorgeous fabrics getting them ready for the fabric kits.

And I am very pleased to report that this had a great affect on my missing Mojo!
Hooray Hooray!

Here are some pics of what my dining table looked like a week ago:

There's not long to wait now until my new Stitch Along Quilt project with Homespun magazine is officially launched. Some of you will remember the blog post and sneak pics of this quilt project a few months ago. For those of you who missed it here is the link:

I looked up the work Mojo on answers.com and it told me that:

"Mojo means "finding the magic in what we do". To have "lost your mojo", refers to a loss of inspiration or creative genius; a loss of that special spark. The word has been around for almost 100 years, one source cites its use to as early as 1926"

So it would seem that people have had this problem for a while, it's not a modern day thing.

I am going to admit to you that I had not picked up a needle for almost 3 months.I have not folded and refolded fabric just for the thrill of it nor have I given the sewing machine a whirl. This even shocks me more as I write this down. Up until now I think I have been in denial.But now I need to sort this thing out.

The problem started when my family and I decided to spend this Christmas in Italy. The trip was wonderful, magical and simply amazing. We spent almost 2 months there.
Now that we are back home I feel like a little boat adrift. Glad to be home yet feeling a tad listless. Is this normal?

Anyway I thought that you may be able to help by making some suggestions for my fast recovery.

The Love of a Daughter and Unfinished Craft Projects

Just yesterday I received a special email which touched my heart.
I hope the writer won't mind if I share its contents with you.

The email was from Laura who was on a mission of sorts. Sadly her mother had passed away and Laura had inherited her mother's half finished sewing and craft projects. Laura described her mother as being both a "proficient and prolific craft person" and I immediately thought about my own stash of half finished projects I too would probably leave behind when my turn came around.

Laura has decided to take on the task of finishing some of these projects so that she can give them to family members and was writing seeking some technical advice.

Laura's mission reminded me of two other kindred spirits who came to seek similar advice a few years back. One daughter had inherited a collection of cream heirloom quilt blocks, some of which were complete while others remained to be worked. Luckily she also had the pattern and just needed some assistance to learn the embroidery stitches required to complete the quilt. Over the next few months I fondly watched as her mother's stitches blended with her own. I am very pleased to report the quilt was eventually completed and now sits pride of place on her bed.

The other daughter came with a request of a slightly different nature. Her mother had passed away a few years ago and she had kept the outfit her mother had very happily worn on her daughter's wedding day. The daughter had been unable to part with it because it held such happy memories for her, although she felt that tucking the outfit away in a cupboard somewhere was a bit pointless. Instead her ambitious plan was to incorporate some of the fabric from the outfit into a quilt for her bedroom. Thankfully the two piece outfit was made of cotton and we were able to cut enough squares from the gathered skirt and blouse to feature in the quilt. Needless to say she was thrilled with the result and can now look at the quilt each day with fond memories.

These wonderful acts of love in motion all touched my heart and have given me hope.
Hope that I may also find the time to finish two half completed projects I have inherited from my own much missed Grandmother, and hope that there is also a chance for my collection of unfinished projects to be finished one day in my memory.

Hi Lenna,
After reading on the blog about "unfinished projects" I thought I would share mine with you and your readers if you would care to post.

The quilt in the picture was pieced with scraps of colorful fabric and flour sacks by my grandmother in 1930. Called a grandmother's flower garden quilt, each "flower" is pieced together from individual hexagon pieces. When I was in my early 40's (about 15 years ago) my grandmother gave me the quilt top. I have always loved the idea of quilting, but lacked the knowledge to know what to do next. Fortunately for me, I made friends with an Amish family that offered to help get the batting and backing in place. They fixed the rotted pieces of the the quilt and after a 7 hour drive to Illinois, they showed me how to back the quilt and stretch it up for the actual quilting...we had a little quilting bee for a couple hours before I had to pack up and head for home - it was a wonderful experience while it lasted. So, now every year, I hoop quilt a section of it in the dead of winter - that seems to make the dreary days seem a little brighter...and I am about halfway finished as of this year! I can't imagine the time it took to cut the exact pieces and then hand sew them perfectly together. But then again, my grandmother was an amazing woman! She did the most beautiful handwork...tatting, crocheting, knitting, embroidery...I am so fortunate to have some of her work in my collection of linens, etc. Hopefully in a few years it will be finished and I can put it on display.

2011 Quilters Diary

Yesterday when I ventured out my front door there was a surprise parcel sitting on my door step. I was even more excited when I discovered it was from Universal Magazines, the publishing house of Homespun magazine and Quilters Companion. Had I ordered something which I had forgotten about (I often do this!).

I ripped open the packaging like an excited child and there before me was a lovely 2011 quilters diary. The cover was not familiar and I was fairly sure that I had not ordered this item, although I was thrilled to have it in my hands.
On closer inspection of its beautiful pages I was even more excited to find one of my own designs featured amongst the pages of June.

There on the glossy page before me was my "Wrens Amongst the Blossoms" bag. I was thrilled and could hardly wait to show off my discovery when the kids rolled through the door that afternoon. Here is a close up of the bag.

If you missed this embroidered bag pattern design it is available on the Stitching Cow website as a paper pattern or downloadable e-pattern.

Also keep your eyes open for this Quilters Dairy, Homespun magazine are currently running a special subscription offer and giving away this lovely diary as a bonus. I am hoping it will keep me more organized next year!!??

New Christmas Designs

This week I have been immersed in all things Christmas and I have some sneak peek photos of my progress to share with you.

For some time now I have been planning to make Christmas stockings for the kids. A few years ago I designed them but unfortunately they remained in my sketch book unable to see the light of day. Sadly I just never seemed to find the time to make them up. There were always too many things on the "to do list" and not enough hours in the day. That is until now.

I formalized the original sketches that I had drawn quickly in my sketch book. Here they are with coffee mug in the distance!

The I took up needle and tread and started to embroider. Once the stitcheries were complete I then set to work on the sewing machine and made three patchwork pieces each in a different colourway. I think the red is my favourite.

Before long they were beginning to look like Christmas stockings, much to the delight of the kids who were secretly watching my progress from afar.

To finish them off I crocheted a length from 8 ply cotton to make a bow and then fixed some brass bells to the ends. That way they will tinkle as little hands explore their contents on Christmas morning.

With three Christmas stockings now complete I set to work on a Christmas table runner design that had been buzzing around in my head for a few weeks.

Once it was sketched I started on the embroidery, which is always the part I enjoy most. Next I sewed the scalloped border and hand pieced the mini stars, they are so cute!

Homespun Magazine Secret New Quilt Project for 2011

I am just coming back out into the light after completing a new secret quilt project for Homespun Magazine.

As usual I started at a leisurely pace only to find myself racing towards the publishing deadline at a fast and furious sprint. The lovely Catherine from Homespun magazine commissioned me for the project which was to include 18 small embroideries and a centre panel.

When I discovered a new pretty floral range from Moda which included happy Polk Dots I couldn't wait to begin.Before long the fat quarter bundle arrived at my door. It was so wonderful to look at that I just sat it on my old kitchen dresser to admire for a week. I proudly shared it with some of my sewing friends who called in for a cuppa during the week. They too "gooed and garred" over it which made me feel far more normal.

In hindsight to leave it sitting for a whole week just looking at it was probably not the most sensible idea, although I like to think that each time I passed it my vision for the quilt became clearer in my mind. Here is the patchwork fabric stack arranged in all its glory.

Next it was time to choose embroidery threads, another part of the design process I enjoy.

Soon embroidery blocks started to appear as did sketches of the overall layout. Although I confess I totally underestimated the brain power that was needed to design the quilt based on fat quarters. And I have to admit that the layout was redrawn a number of times before the maths stacked up (thank goodness for calculators)

I even employed Miss 10 to unpick a few seams sewn in error. Yes I make lots of mistakes too!

Despite my mishaps eventually the quilt started to take shape and I was able to catch a glimpse of the finishing line.

With less than one week to go and visitors from interstate begging to explore Tasmania, I made the brave decision to hand quilt. This meant a daily routine of sight seeing during the day, gourmet cooking of an evening and hand quilting late into the night.

With cotton threads sprinkled around my home, piles of fabric offcuts surrounding my workspace and coffee mugs lined up beside my sewing machine I wondered if other designers worked in such chaos. I even had chocolate wrappers jammed in my sewing bin, a timely and much appreciated birthday present from master 14.

As I wrapped the quilt and addressed it to the lovely Catherine of Homespun Magazine I glanced at the clock. I had made it and with 3 hours to spare...what was I so worried about???!!!

Free Hand Quilting

My new Redwork Quilt (which is another version of my appliqued Nursery Rhyme quilt) is now ready to enjoy.

I decided to free hand quilt each block and thought I would share with you some pictures of my progress. Free hand quilting is a pure joy. It is very relaxing and there is more freedom involved.

It is an interesting and effective way to add a sense of movement to your quilt. Usually free hand quilting is worked on a background area where you do not have to compete with seams. Quilting lines are typically flowing and I draw mine onto the quilt top as I work using a quick vanishing marker pen which is shown below.

You can also see the small quilting needle I use which is much smaller than an ordinary crewel needle (shown along side it)

Shown below are more tools of the trade including the hand quilting thread I love to use. Putting a rubber band around the spool stops the hand quilting thread from unwinding. I also use a rubber thimble to help grip the needle.

Here you can see the lines of hand quilting.

When free hand quilting I tend not to use a quilting hoop. Instead I roll the quilt to the area I am working, quilting towards myself and unrolling the quilt as needed. This means I can quilt much faster than normal.

Nursery Rhyme Fun

Not long to go now before my Redwork Nursery Rhyme Quilt is finished and ready for launch.
I am in the process of hand quilting the star blocks in the corners and then attaching the binding.

In keeping with the Nursery Rhyme theme I cam across a blog post by Salley Mavor of Wee Folk Studio. Salley is one of my favourite craft designers and I just had to share it with you.

Salley has just completed a project starring the Black Hen from Hickety Pickety. Her creativity and work is simply amazing.

Redwork Nursery Rhyme Quilt in Progress

This week I have been working on the Redwork version of my Nursery Rhyme Quilt.

After launching my appliqued nursery rhyme quilt last year I had requests for a Redwork version, which at the time I thought was a wonderful idea. Truth is, although the idea was a good one I was not enthused about reworking the design. It kind of felt like remaking the same quilt, hence my lack of enthusiasm. It is always so much fun creating a new design for the first time. Reworking a design never seems to have the same excitement. If you have ever had to make the same pattern twice you will know what I mean.

So after weeks of no action, I decided to enlist the help of a wonderful sewing fairy who completed the embroidered blocks for me. I was thrilled with them when they arrived at my doorstep, although I felt I needed to add a few more details to the designs before I was completely happy with them. Reworking the original applique design to a Redwork design involved more work than I expected.

I even found some new fabrics that I felt were ideal for this Redwork project. You would think that this would have given me the motivation I needed but unfortunately the completed blocks remained in my cupboard, as did the bolts of fabric.

But this week, after ordering even more fabrics for a new project in the planning with Homespun magazine, I just had to take action. As hubby keeps reminding me bolts of fabric just can't keep coming in, eventually some has to go out. His logic not mine but I know he has a point.

When I laid the blocks out I felt that I needed to make even more changes, and so I totally new quilt layout started to take shape.

I am pleased to report that the quilt is now together and this week I will be hand quilting it. So stay tuned I will have a photo of my Redwork Nursery Rhyme Quilt by next week.

Homespun Magazine Felt Christmas Decorations

It's fabulous and I am thrilled to be apart of it. I have a sweet little collection of felt Christmas decorations to share with you, they're perfect for the tree.

Readers in Australia will know all about Christmas in July, although international readers may be scratching their heads and wondering what all the Christmas fuss is about.

You see July is chilly here in Australia so it is a perfect opportunity to cook up the traditional Christmas foods without breaking out in a hot sweat. It's our opportunity to experience the festive season all over again, and crafters embrace the chance to start on their Christmas sewing.

That's why each year I look forward to Homespun Magazine's Christmas in July issue and this year it has exceeded all my expectations. A Day Trip with Hubby for Patchwork Fabrics

Last week I went on a day trip with Hubby to a regional field day on a quest for patchwork fabric. I don't usually tag along with Hubby as he goes about his work but last week was different because he lured me away from my sewing machine and computer with the promise of patchwork fabric and gardening stalls. He knew that I would find such a combination irresistible.

Many of you may be unfamiliar with field days. They are usually of an agricultural nature and are held outdoors in the middle of a paddock. There are rows and rows of tents and stall holders offering everything from tractors through to hardware. Anything really that a farmer may find of interest.

Thankfully the woman folk are not left out and there is a section full of craft, jewellery and home ware type stalls. As promised there were a few patchwork fabric stalls and I could not resist coming home with some bits and pieces for the stash. I came across this cute little cupcake display of gorgeous little patchwork fabrics.

And I also found this panel of patchwork fabric on a Japanese stall that I could not resist for Miss 9. She fancies herself as a dancer so you can see its appeal factor.

Here is the panel which I am hoping will be big enough to make a bag out of.

The garden stalls did not disappoint either and I discovered some beautiful white Lilly bulbs to plant this season and some lush tubs of parsley for the herb patch.
All in all I had a fabulous day and I know that Hubby enjoyed having me along for the ride. Now I just have to put my new patchwork fabrics to good use.

Josie's Cot Quilt

It's finally done, a clot quilt for my new Neice.

When my sister gave birth to a new little girl back in September I promised her a new cot quilt. After meeting and sharing a first cuddle, it was decided that the quilt was to be in reds and creams. Our next get together was to be in March so I new I had heaps of time?!!!

Well so I thought!

A week before I was to leave on my March holiday the rotary cutter came out and this new quilt started to take shape. My new Neice lives on a farm, hence why I incorporated her home, a fence, some trees and a bird. The bird was particularly special because it was drawn by my Miss 9 who was eager to contribute.

I'm pleased to say that the new cot quilt was very well received and my little Neice was promptly wrapped in it. I hope she could feel the love I carefully put into each stitch.

I thought perhaps that I should make this cot quilt into a pattern.

Favourite Pin Cushion Pattern

Do you have a favourite pin cushion pattern?

I have a confession to make.

In January I forgot my friend's birthday. She never forgets my birthday so you can imagine how bad I felt. Trouble was her birthday fell in early January and since I was still in Christmas and holiday mode, I forget to update my new calendar for the year. The calendar has all the family and friend birthdays written clearly in black pen, and usually this sytsem works,that is with the exception of all birthdays that fall in early January.

My friend was away on holidays at the time which did soften my forgetfulness just a little bit, but I still felt I had to make it up to her. Especially considering that she never forgets my birthday and always surprises me with something wonderful.

So when she admired one of my little pin cushions recently I knew I had to find some special fabric and some time to make one for her. My friend is a lover of Japanese fabrics so I searched my fabric cupboard high and low until I found the perfect Japanese fabric to suit.

The pin cushion she admired was luckily one of my favourite pin cushion patterns. I have made lots of them and they are scattered around my home so that I always have pins close and handy.

And I found an old button amongst my button collection that was perfect.

Making pin cushions is so much fun because they are quick and easy.

Although the pumpkin style pin cushion is my favourite I do like designing other styles that are fun and decorative as well. The skyes the limit really.

Recipe for Making Basil Pesto

Summer in Tasmania this year has been particularly beautiful and I am proud to say that Hubby and I have managed to grow our own Basil. This is considered quite a feat amongst Tasmanians, so I found out when we relocated here a few years ago.

Temperatures down here are not normally considered ideal for Basil growing so you can imagione out excitement when we were able to pick enough to make our own Pesto.

I think some of the secret has been growing it from seed and then placing it along the edge of a small garden bed enclosed with sandstone. Hubby has made two batches and I am sure we will have enough for another few jars before the summer ends.

Here's the recipe just in case you are partial to Basil pesto yourself:
Blend the following ingredients in a food processor
2 cups fresh basil leaves
60g pine nuts
3 garlic cloves
salt and ground black pepper
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

Then stir through the grated cheese.
100g freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Bottle and enjoy.
We use ours stirred through pasta as well as on the base of home made pizzas.Yummy.

Handbag Sewing Patterns in Creating Country Threads and Homespun Magazine

January was a very exciting month for Little Green Cottage with two handbag sewing patterns being published. The first appeared in Australian Homespun Magazine. It was commissioned to feature something Australian to tie in with the monthly theme. And being partial to my garden I thought it appropriate to include some little Wrens dancing amongst the Spring blossoms.

I always enjoy designing bag patterns because they come in very useful for all my sewing projects.

The second of my bag designs appeared in the Applique Creating Country Threads Yearbook. It features Poppies which have been created from Yo Yos and I have hand embroidered the stems and appliqued the leaves. The bag is made from a lovey piece of wool that I sourced last winter. I think it will make the perfect knitting bag.

The patterns for both handbag sewing projects are currently available so look out for them at your local newsagents. They will also be available as downloadable patterns from the Stitching Cow website within the next few months.

An Afternoon of Sketching

Last week was hubby's birthday and it was decided that we should celebrate by having a barbecue down by the river at Richmond. This worked in well with the weekly touch football game that hubby and master 13 enjoy each Thursday afternoon.

Not being very interested in football, Miss 16 and I decided that we should go for a wander around the quaint township of Richmond, which is a visual delight. The town is one of the oldest in Tasmania and has proudly retained many of its original stone cottages and buildings. Richmond is most famous for its convict made bridge which is the oldest in Australia.

I was delighted when Miss 16 made mention that she had her sketch pad in her bag and that perhaps we should sketch a scene together. Miss 16 is very artist and is always sketching, whilst mother has not sketched just for fun in a very long time. So the idea was exciting although a bit unsettling, especially when Miss 16 announced that she had only packed two black ink pens which meant that there was going to be no room for error. Yikes!

We eventually decided on a scene and settled ourselves on a park bench. The idea was to record what was in front of us in a short period of time. We didn't want Hubby to notice that we had both disappeared from the football sideline.

We both started in and did not look at each others sketches until the end. It was amazing how different our interpretations were.

Unfortunately I do not have a picture of Miss 16's sketch, although I can tell you that it was very good and much better than mine.

I was lucky enough to find a picture on Flickr of the side of the building we sketched. It's the white building on the right.

Reliving this afternoon now I appreciate how wonderful it was.
Far more important than the sketches was the special memory that we had created. I fondly remember us both sitting there in silence, sharing a creative moment and enjoying each others company.
It was very magically and will be remembered for many years to come.

New Embroidery Project Featured in Sew It All Magazine

Yipee, I've been published in a brand new, United States based magazine called Sew It All. This is very exciting seeing as I live across the other side of the world on a little island. So this seems a bit surreal. Sew It All has been put together by the same team as Sew News which you may have heard of if you live in the States.

When the editor Ellen March contacted me months ago to commission a project featuring hand embroidery I eagerly accepted. The 'Sew It All" magazine has only just hit the stands in America and has already been a huge success.
Here's the project that I came up with.

"Sew It All" magazine features many different projects to suit a variety of skill levels and each project is categories under time friendly, budget friendly, eco friendly and kid friendly.There's something for everyone.

And they also included a snippet from each of the designers and a graphic, can you find me?

Homespun Magazine a Christmas Design in the Making

When the phone rang last week it was the delightful Catherine from Homespun Magazine reminding me that she had commissioned me for a project for the Christmas in July addition. This meant a flurry of sketches, some exchanging of ideas and a trip to town for some lovely wool felt.

Here's a peek at what emerged.

Upon entering the tiny Steiner shop in Hobart, which is well know for its wholesome treasures, I was occupied for ages trying to choose form the shelves of felt squares that were before me. This did not amuse Hubby, who after 20 minutes was anxiously looking for an escape plan. He had accompanied me with the plan of starting our Christmas shopping and this was not his idea of playing Santa.

After mush deliberation I just had to buy a dozen and I was very proud of my decision when it was rewarded with another felt square for free. Here is my collection, aren't the colours wonderful. They look so good that I have not released them form the roll yet.

Something I know I will have to do very soon so that I can make a start. Otherwise I will not be able to enjoy them this Christmas which would make far more sense than trying to muster some Christmas excitement after the big event in January, when the project is due.

I'll share some snippets of my Homespun Christmas projects as they emerge.

Creating Country Threads Project Lizzie

Look who appears in this month's

Creating Country Threads Magazine.

Lizzie is no stranger to some of you because she featured in another blog post of mine. She was the naughty doll whose shiny black painted boots left a nasty surprise on my Laura Ashley curtains.

But all is forgiven because she features on the front cover, looking ever so elegant.

You can see from the cover that this issue of Creating Country Threads is

a stitchery special packed full of embroidery projects to tempt you.

And as usual Danielle and the team have done a wonderful job photographing here.

Craft Fun at School Fete

Things get extra crazy around here when it is time to have some craft fun making items for the school fete.

Luckily I have some very clever "crafty friends" who come to my rescue as the date looms.

As usual everything is left until a few weeks before hand. Then all of a sudden it dawns on us.

We kick into action. Our needles are sharpened and our sewing machines begin to race.

Fabric is chopped, creatures are stuffed.

Coffee and chocolate is consumed and there is much laughter.

Slowly the baskets are filled with all manner of crafty delights.

Nursery Rhyme Quilt

It's finally finished, my new nursery rhyme quilt.

This block of the month pattern series has been floating around in my head for some time so it's such a relief to finally see it finished. I have been thrilled with the response from everyone and have enjoyed hearing stories about new baby arrivals and special grand children.

One lady wrote to tell me that as she printed out the pattern she was reminded of her own childhood and the pleasant memories she had of her own mother reciting nursery rhymes to her. This brought a smile to my face because I too have fond memories of singing nursery rhymes to my own children when they were younger.

I hope they never get lost in our society because they have such value.

Tacking or Basting a Quilt

Tacking or Basting a quilt is an exciting step because it means your quilt is almost finished.

I'm very excited to let you know that my new nursery rhyme block of the month quilt was at this stage a few weeks ago.

Here it is on my worktable as I was hand tacking it in preparation for hand quilting. I always start down on the floor but it is agony on my knees (I have floor boards!!!), so once I get a few lines of tacking in place I put it up higher.

Speaking of tacking out a quilt for hand quilting, I thought I would share a few tips with you.

If you have tacked out a quilt before you will understand that after a while your fingers become very sore from picking up the needle. A tip to avoid this is to use a teaspoon (yes you heard me right). When your needle comes up from the back place the teaspoon underneath and you will find that it is much easier to pick up. Because the pressure is on the spoon and not your fingers it takes all the discomfort out of it.

Although use an old teaspoon rather than one out of you best cutlery set because it can get scratched from the needle.

Another tip is to use a contrasting thread that is easy to see. This will make pulling out the tacking much easier at another stage. I also work from the centre out and always knot off into the border of the batting rather than the quilt top. Working a row close to the outside edge is another tip which will ensure that your binding goes on without a single pucker.

Hope you have found these tips for tacking or basting a quilt useful.

Story by an Obsessed Quilt Maker

We patchwork and quilters are strange creatures aren't we?
Well perhaps not strange but amusing.
Last week my youngest sister brought into the world the most precious little girl you can imagine.
Our family was overjoyed, it has been years since we had a new baby to enjoy and fuss over.

Of course my mind immediately turned to designing something special to help celebrate the occasion.

My fingers were literally itching wanting to create something wonderful.
I had been holding off until we knew whether a girl or boy quilt was in order.

My sister had visualized us having a sewing day together,
which was to take place when I visited from interstate. She had planned an occasion like this before and
I knew from experience that the truth of the matter was that I sewed frantically while she made coffee and chatted. Not being a sewer herself I think my frantic cutting sewing and deliberating over fabric choices amuses her although she is always very appreciative of my efforts and we manage to
talk constantly over the whir of the sewing machine and share some special hours, so I do not mind the arrangement at all.

Keeping all this in mind I literally dived head first into my sewing cupboard and started grabbing fabrics that I thought would be suitable for the new quilt. Trouble was the pile of fabrics started growing so tall that I knew I could never fit them all into my suitcase or hide them from my hubby who would have shaken his head in disbelief and considered me a bit mad I'm sure.

I soon realized that a quick email to my sister was needed to help determine a colourway to design with.
Thank goodness she had taken the lap top to hospital which meant that my problem was soon solved and the fabric pile was reduced to half. I was then able to stuff the piles of fabric between my socks and bras before hubby could notice.

Then of course there was the rotary cutter, rulers, cutting mat, threads, needles...etc etc.
Luckily I zipped up the suitcase before he entered the bedroom, hence avoiding any uncomfortable questions.
although he did comment in disbelief that I had chosen the biggest of our suitcases to take on the trip despite the fact I was only going for a weeks visit.

And of course there were more comments as he heaved the heavy suitcase out to the car.
Truth is he even made me weigh it as we passed the scales in the bathroom so as not to face an excess luggage charge when we reached the airport.
Thankfully I was just under the limit and did not have to unzip my luggage and reveal my deed and secret fabric stash!

Before long I was on my way, nestled in the comfort of the aeroplane seat, fabrics tucked in safely below.

As I closed my eyes to rest my thoughts turned to the wonderful feeling of cuddling a new born baby and the special quilt we would create together just for her.

Block of the Month Quilt - Block 8

Being a keen gardener I had heaps of fun sewing the last block for my new Block of the Month Quilt design.

The nursery rhyme Mary Mary Quite Contrary was always of interest to me as a small child. I remember pouring over the illustrations seeking out the flowers that had been depicted. It amused me that cockle shells were in Mary's garden because I was a country girl who lived far from the sea. I wasn't familiar with shells and the thought of having them in the garden seemed strange. Now living in Tasmania, a small island surrounded by the sea, the idea of using cockle shells as a garden edge doesn't seem nearly so strange.
Although I chose not to include shells in my design I wanted to include Mary and of course a watering can.
I came across some wonderful photos of old watering cans and thought I would share them with you.

Aren't they amazing!
I have an old watering can that I use for my garden which is the one I used for inspiration for my block design.

And of course there are some flowers with little Yo Yo centres.

Block of the Month Pattern Hickety Pickety

When I was a little girl my grandparents had a few chooks to keep them in eggs. They started with three but as the years went by only one remained. She was a homely little black chook that went by the name of "Murtle".

Unfortunately I do not have a photo of Murtle, but this is what she looked like although I think she was a little plumper.

I have very fond memories of Murtle. When visiting, my Grandmother would invite me to check for eggs. This was always an exciting job because we did not have any chickens at home. Discovering a warm egg in the nest was a thrill!

But the best part was that Murtle was always happy to see me. She was not the kind of chook that chased you around the chicken coop, and she was not the kind to sit on her eggs all day long. This pleased me immensely because reaching underneath a chook to gather eggs was far too much of a mystery for a small child. Who knows what I would find or accidentally grab.

Murtle seemed only too happy for me to collect her egg when I visited. And what made the exercise even more memorable was the little hand woven basket my grandmother had made for the purpose. It was barely large enough to hold 3 small eggs, and made of thick twine so that the eggs were cushioned from the clumsy nature of small hands.

Murtle lived for many years and was a comfort to my Grandmother while she lived on her own. Then one day Murtle died.

A few years later when my Grandmother passed away we returned to her home. While sorting through her things I was delighted to find the little basket, a little swashed but still in good condition.

Its uncovering was perfect because I now had small children of my own and some pet chooks, one for each of them. They were exactly like the ones shown in the photo here. Their names were Fluffy, Scruffy and Peck.

So the little basket came home with me that day and into the hands of the next generation of egg gatherers.

But each time I see it I think of my Grandmother and her black chook Murtle.

In light of this story you will understand why I had to include Hickety Pickety in my new Nursery Rhyme Quilt design.

Block of the Month Quilting Pattern - Twinkle Twinkle

I've just finished another Block for my new block of the month quilting pattern. This week it's all about Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
Truth is I was not happy with my fist idea for this block so went back to the drawing board and came up with a new design.

Stars are such wonderful things aren't they? Its no wonder that they inspire so many craft people.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star has always been one of the favourite nursery rhymes. I have very find memories of my children when they were younger beaming with delight as they performed the actions as I sang along. I can still see their chubby little fingers being twinkling stars.

Kids Sewing Ideas from Little Green Cottage

This month Creating Country Threads Magazine has a kids sewing theme which I am very proud to be apart of.

I strongly believe that teaching kids how to sew is very important. It's a skill that they could benefit from for the rest of their lives.

From a very early age each of my three children showed an interest in learning how to sew. This probably had something to do with the fact that their mum was often sewing and hence they wanted to be a part of the action.

At first they were happy just to play with the contents of my ribbon box and then soon progressed to threading buttons onto string and then to sewing around a design that was drawn onto cardboard. Before long they were sewing with felt and then fabric.

For years I enjoyed teaching groups of kids how to sew during school holidays. My classes were always full to over flowing and I enjoyed seeing the delight on their little faces when they creating something special. This lead me to designing some simple kids sewing patterns which can be found on the Stitching Cow website.

When Creating Country Threads contacted to ask if I would like to contribute to their kids sewing special naturally I was thrilled. I designed a simple project suitable for a little girl's bedroom. It incorporates fusible webbing and simple appliqué. My kids always loved sewing on buttons so I decided to add this element into the design as well.

I also designed a cute angel ideal for hanging on a door knob.

Project for Australian Country Threads Magazine

I must tell you a story about a recent project that I was commissioned to design for Australian Country Threads magazine. It's more of a confession really and you must promise not to tell anyone in my family, especially hubby.

In fact after hearing what I did feel free to add your own story to this blog post just to make me feel better.

When the lovely Danielle rang me from Australian Country Threads magazine to design a project for an upcoming stitchery special, I was thrilled. We decided on a doll pattern which also thrilled my Miss 9 who seemed eager to claim another doll for her bedroom!
The task gave me an opportunity to have a break from my new quilt project and after acquiring the perfect bundle of fabrics I set to work.

As my new doll design took shape it came time to paint her boots.
I decided to paint them jet black and to finish them with a coat of varnish. After applying a thick coat of paint I had to decide on the best method to dry them. Glancing out the window I was determined not to venture out in the cold and instead decided to hang them on a small clothes line I had in the lounge room.
I made this hasty decision despite two facts that were glaring me in the face. Number one, the small clothes line was crammed full with a load of white washing, and number two it was positioned very close to the window and my lounge room curtains.

BUT with wet boots in hand and few options available to me (I hadn't really thought this step through) I headed to the indoor clothes line...reached for some pegs and carefully positioned the legs with the wet, glistening boots so that they dangled in a small gap between the wet white washing. So far so good, or so I thought!

As I went to walk away I bumped the clothes line so that the boots swung in the air and brushed up against my beautiful blue Laura Ashley curtains. For a moment I could not believe what I had done. I froze in time as I glared at the big black blob of paint that was now on my curtains. My only comfort was that I was on my own and none of the kids or hubby had witnessed my moment of shame. Or heard the gasp of horror escape my lips (which was really a mouth full of bad language) The next 10 minutes was spent scrubbing and scrubbing and scrubbing again until my bad deed had been hidden. And I am very relieved to report that the paint mark did come off although after a difficult fight!

Here are the little black boots at the heart of my crime.

As you can see my doll design has a hand embroidered apron and petticoat.

Seemingly unaware of the stressful moment her boots caused me.

So now you know my secret. My little moment of madness. Any sensible person would have known that wet black paint, white washing and blue curtains were never going to be a good combination, but not me.
Please make me feel better by sharing any moments of madness related to sewing projects that you have experienced. I promise not to tell anyone!!!

New Block of the Month Pattern Block Four

A lovely old Grandfather clock and a little cheeky mouse make up the theme of block four in my new block of the month quilt pattern. You guessed it, it's Hickory Dickory Dock.

One of my passions is collecting old furniture and memorabilia. My parents always had a fascination for old things and I have many a fond memory spending hours at country auctions. Often this was not as idealistic as it sounds. Many a day was spent in stifling heat and dust waiting , waiting waiting for that treasured item to come up in the sale. But during these outings I learned a lot from Dad about what to look for in a quality piece. And before long I also had the bug and started dragging my poor husband off to as many sales as I could find.

So when it came to thinking about the Grandfather clock my little mouse would scamper up, I knew it had to be old. I am constantly amazed at the attention to detail and craftsmanship found in old furniture. And clocks are among the best examples.

Do yourself a favour and spend a few minutes to admire the beautiful detail on these Grandfather clocks.

And here is the top of my clock.

Then there was consideration for the little mouse who would go running up the clock until the hour of one. Would he be white?

Or would he be brown?

Or maybe Gray or maybe Tartan

Here's what I decided.

New Block of the Month Pattern Block Three

Rolling around at sea in a pea green boat is the inspiration for the third block in my new block of the month quilt pattern. You guessed it it's the Owl and the Pussycat. Such a strange combination when you consider the temperament of a cat compared to that of an owl, which is probably why this delightful pair get along so well.

The version above has the pussycat looking ever so formal and here is another version which brought a smile to my face.

I have to confess that I am not normally a cat lover although I could easily find a place for this little fellow in my home.
And here is yet another whimsical interpretation that I have included here because it is so unusual.

I have to confess that when I started sewing my version of The Owl and the Pussycat I got so carried away with the design that the boat was almost brown...how could I. We all know that it was pea green after all.
And here is a peek of my Owl looking warily at his companion.

Who is the Cat.

And they are bobbing along amongst the waves having a delightful time.

New Block of the Month Pattern Block Two

My new block of the month pattern is slowly emerging and I am excited to share with you block two Hey Diddle Diddle. For those of you unfamiliar with this nursery rhyme it involves a cat and a fiddle, a flying cow, a little dog, and a dish running away with a spoon.

Hey Diddle Diddle had always been a favourite of mine. I think it has to do with the novel idea of a cow flying over the moon. Being a country girl at heart I just had to include the cow in my design.
Seems this cow flying concept has inspired many an artist and craft enthusiast.

I even have a cup cake to share with you whose maker obviously enjoys this rhyme as well.

And here is a glimpse of my version in needle and thread.

New Block of the Month Pattern Block One

For the last few weeks I have been busy sewing the first blocks for my new block of the month pattern. I am trying to be a lot more disciplined with my pattern writing and have made a new rule for myself. I am only allowed to sew up 3 blocks at a time and then I must write the patterns to correspond. As you can imagine the sewing is much more fun and in previous years I have made the mistake of sewing the entire quilt before typing a single pattern. Very naughty.
I just get carried away with the creating.
Although I take down notes I find that I struggle to remember everything which makes the whole pattern writing task very tedious. So please help me to stay on track.
This week I am proud to report that 2 1/2 blocks are complete and two pattens are written, so far so good!
As promised I am excited to introduce to you my first block based on one of my favourite nursery rhymes Humpty Dumpty.
I had fun researching for this block and thought I would share with you some of the wonderful images I came across.

As you can see lots of Humpty Dumptys in all shapes and sizes.
Here is a glimpse of my very own Humpty Dumpty complete with checked pants and purple buckled shoes.

He sits happily on his brick wall amongst the flowers completely unaware that at any time he could fall!

As you can see I have used a combination of needle turn applique and hand embroidery. My two favourite techniques.
However last week a few keen Redworkers contacted me and inquired as to whether I could release this pattern as a Redwork project as well. Is this something that would appeal to you?

Nursery Rhymn Quilt Ideas

For the past couple of weeks my mind has been a swirl with ideas for my new block of the month quilt which will be based on nursery rhymes. I've had heaps of fun looking through favourite nursery rhyme books trying to decide which ones to include. There are so many to choose from and I have fond memories of singing them to my children. My Miss Eight (almost nine) is very excited by my new design sketches and has eagerly made her suggestions as to which ones to include.

I discovered this image on Flikr today which took me back many years to my childhood. I wonder if Mum still has this album lying around somewhere. I used to play it often.

A few weekends ago my sewing friends and I attended a new arts/craft market in Hobart. We were delighted to discover lots of hand crafted goodies including exquisite cards and stationery, designer children's clothing, fabric bags, quirky softies and jewellery.

The work of one designer particularly caught my eye and I found it very hard to drag myself away from her stall. I finally decided on this necklace and matching clips. Seeing as my family are always having a go at me about being late, I felt the Alice in Wonderland rabbit and I could co exist very happily.

Please Help - Redwork Patterns or Nursery Rhyme Quilt?

I have a quilt design dilemma. My sketch journal is over flowing with two new quilt designs. The first is a nursery rhyme quilt that has been floating around in my mind for a whole year. It was such a relief to get it out onto paper. The second is a design for series of Redwork patterns that can be combined into a quilt. It came to mind a few weeks ago. So now my dilemma is which to start on first. I have been looking at both designs for over a week now but find myself paralysed with in decision. Perhaps you could help me.

Which quilt would you like to see complete first.

The nursery Rhyme quilt will combine needle turn applique and hand embroidery. I had heaps of fun trying to decide which rhymes to include, there are so many that I love. Here is a sneak peek at two of the blocks.

There are twelve blocks in total.
The redwork patterns are based on the song "let me tell you about the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees" and look something like this:

All about the Kids and Tomatoes

I've been sitting at the keyboard wondering what to write about this week. Was there anything that I had done worthy of writing about? Where had the week vanished to?...then it struck me.
Last week was all about the kids and tomatoes so that's what I should write about.

Once in a while I take time out from Magazine deadlines and future pattern designs to make some things for the kids. My son has had a quilt in the making for 2 years now. Well it's almost finished it's just the hand quilting to go. Sadly over summer it had been shoved in a corner and neglected. When we redecorated his room this year in preparation for high school the fact that his bed was missing his quilt glared me in the face. In an attempt to make myself feel better I rushed to retrieve his quilt from the corner and placed it on his bed, masking tape and all. I then decided that some new matching cushions were needed and planned those for next weekend. Here's the quilt in question.

It has a panel of appliquéd buildings at the top and some crows.

Three cushion covers emerged very
quickly Sunday afternoon. I had no pattern and I didn't even sketch them on paper first. Very unlike me, but surprisingly I found the whole process very liberating.

As I placed them on his bed I felt very pleased with myself and my Son's smile touched my heart.

I had crocheted the girls a scarf each last weekend so this was his little treat.
On scarf inspection for this post I visited number one daughter's bedroom (it is a mess!!!) but she has her scarf hanging with her favourite grey coat which is a great sign that she really likes it. I think Mum has done well.

Here is the other one for my youngest daughter.

And I am excited to say that out tomatoes are finally coming in so we spent some time in the Autumn sun visiting the veg patch . I'm hoping to have enough to make some relish this year. Although they look so good in the bowl that I almost don't want to cook them.

And finally Hubby was traveling up North this week with work so I sent him on a quest for fabrics to make daughter number one a bag for her birthday. He came back with this linen and some Amy Butler fabric which will be perfect. Yikes hope she doesn't see this post!

To think I was struggling to find something to share with you.
This week was about the kids and the tomatoes but that's OK!

This week I have been planning a workshop in conjunction with Delia of the Needlewoman. Delia had a divine shop on Liverpool Street, right in the heart of Hobart. It is brimming with beautiful fabrics and has an ideal area upstairs for sewing gatherings.
Some of my block of the month quilt patterns are currently on show in Delia's shop, one of which is in the front window. This quilt in particular seems to have intrigued many interested sewers who are eager to learn how I colourwash fabric. So all will be revealed in an upcoming workshop planned for 5th May.
The focus of the workshop will be on creating one of the panels taken from my Kiss of the Sun block of the month quilt shown below.

The day will be a hands on approach so that you can sample this technique for yourself.

Hand embroidery stitches used throughout this quilt will also be demonstrated and I will be sharing all my little tips and secrets. Delia has a scrumptious luncheon organized and of course there will be some yummy morning and afternoon tea as well.

Sewing Projects For Kids

Sewing projects for kids are hard to find, do you agree?

As a mother of 3 children who adore all manner of crafts, I was always on the look out for sewing projects for kids. All too often I couldn't find anything that was suitable, this was especially true when the kids were younger and lacked the skills needed for most patterns.

In light of this I was not surprised when Danielle, the editor of Australian Country Threads contacted me recently with a project request. In a past conversation Danielle had expressed her excitement at stumbling across the kids section on the Stitching Cow website. She was both impressed and relieved to find patterns there especially designed with kids in mind. Thankfully the team at Australian Country Threads are taking on the challenge themselves and have decided to focus an upcoming issue on sewing projects for kids.
Naturally I was keen to be involved and immediately took pencil and paper in hand and jotted down some initial ideas.

These evolved into some colour sketches.

Cute little girls started dancing across the paper.

And then another emerged.

I sent both design ideas through to Danielle and she phoned me soon after.
"I just love them, can we have both?" she beamed.

This conversation took place before Christmas but as usual I have left everything to the last moment. They are now due for the post on Friday and I haven't made a start!
Yikes please don't tell Danielle.
I had better go and start sorting through my fabric stash for some yummy fabrics to work with.
I'll let you have a sneak peak at them before they go on their journey.
And don't forget to keep an eye out for Australian Country Thread's special issue jam packed with sewing projects for kids, my Miss 8 year old will be very excited I'm sure.

Treasured Finds

Just had to share with you my treasured finds from a "girlie's day out" recently.
Few people would get excited by these items, but as a fellow sewer I know they will not be lost on you.
Not only was I excited to find them all but the amazing thing is that I was surprised by how inexpensive they were. Or maybe that's me just thinking that because I love them sooooo much. My darling hubby didn't seem to relish in the same excitement although he normally pretends to be excited just to please me.
My girlie friends on the other hand, who are all proficient with a needle and thread, basked in the glory of the find. All praising me for my spotting skills.
My first treasure was being thrown away but luckily for me, and for them, I saved them from an unknown future. They now take pride of place alongside my fabric cupboard. Although I need to be on the look out because my 12 year old son spied them recently and stared waving them around as if they were "Light Sabres" out of Star Wars.

My other treasures came from one of my favourite shops here in Hobart, Store and Co.
I have to admit that at first glance I thought I had found some lovely little soaps, luckily one of my friends set me straight explaining they were pencil erasers. This caught my attention because as all mothers know finding a pencil eraser in a household of children is an impossible task. Surely this one had my ownership stamped all over it, or that of a distinctive bee anyway.

The third of my treasures was a pair of brass coloured scissors made in India. I was concerned that perhaps they were not fabric scissors until the helpful shop assistant let me hack into a fabric sample she had under the counter. This was all the encouragement I needed.

Australian Country Threads Article

Just recently Australian Country Threads invited me to appear in their Special Appliqué Yearbook issue. Naturally I was thrilled. Being a lover of hand appliqué, designing a suitable project for the magazine was an easy and enjoyable task.
When the magazine arrived in my mailbox I was excited to find my cushion featured on the front cover and a lovely 3 page article with the title "Meet Australia's Leading Craft Talent", wow what can I say but that I was taken back.
It's always a wonderful feeling to see your own designs in print.

Best apricot jam recipe

Today I'm going to share my best apricot jam recipe. If you would like to learn how to make apricot jam then keep reading.

One of my favourite things about summer is the seasonal fruit that becomes available. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of my mother and sisters with buckets in hand on our quest for apricots. Although we lived in town, we were fortune enough to have family and friends on nearby farms. Each year we would get the call to say "The apricots are ready, come out and help yourself"
What followed was buckets brimming with fresh, sweet smelling apricots and tummies full to bursting point.
The next day was jam making day and the house filled with the divine smell of apricots cooking as I learned from mum how to make apricot jam.
These memories came flooding back to me recently when our neighbour called over the fence "Want some apricots? There's more than I can manage over here so help yourselves"
As we scurried next door with our buckets in hand I felt like Martha B Rabbit excited about the prospect of stocking the pantry with jams for winter.
That afternoon I looked out my best apricot jam recipe and started processing.
Here's how to make apricot jam.

Wash then cut in half 1.5kg of apricots.

Measure out 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and 1.25kg of sugar.

Place the apricots in a large saucepan with 1/2 cup of water and 1/3 of the sugar.
Stir until the sugar has dissolved.
Boil the apricots until they are soft then add the remainder of the sugar and the lemon juice.

Boil over low heart for approximately 30 minutes-to 1 hour.
The jam should turn a darker colour and should jell when cool.

I normally spoon a small amount out and cool on a crockery plate.
When the apricot jam is cool it should be thicker.

Bottle in clean jars. Yummy!

Creative Hand Embroidey Magazine Project

Finally the kids are back at school and I can catch up on all my blogging. I can't believe that weeks and weeks have passed since I shared all my news with you. Very remiss of me.
So, where to start?
Maybe it would be best to give you a summary of my hectic and crazy life since my sister's visit back in November. Yikes can that really be almost 3 months ago?
Sadly I didn't get much of a chance for sewing days in the holidays although I was commissioned by a leading American craft magazine to design a project for a special up coming addition.

I started with a brief sketch of two throw cushions.

Then it was off to buy some fabrics and as usual I came home with a lovely bundle to help get the creative juices flowing.

I also found some Ricrak in my braid basket that was the perfect shade.
And some yummy DMC embroidery threads...just right!

I also decided to antique some fabric that had been in my fabric cupboard for years, just waiting for its out coming and moment of glory. Little did it know it was heading overseas!

Then my next challenge was to find a free afternoon for some serious sewing.
Here's a glimpse of what emerged.

I decided to attach the Ricrak with French knots.

The next day they were both on their way to the United States, lucky them.
Unfortunately there wasn't enough room for me!

The cushions will be published in a Creative Hand Embroidery issue later in the year.
But more about that later.

Sewing Fun with my Sister

Recently my sister and her family came for a visit. It was her first visit to Tasmania so it was extra special for us and her family. We had ten days and lots of things to do and see. And despite enjoying the local tourist attractions, one of your favourite days was our sewing day together.
Amongst her suitcase she had managed to tuck in some wonderful designer fabrics by Kristen Doran. Many of you may already be familiar with her work, Kristen is one of our designer treasures here in Australia.

The fact that she had bought fabric amused me since she had not sewn on a sewing machine since High School. Something about the designs had captivated her imagination and she just had to have them. For many years I was the only sister of three who was excited by looking and playing with fabrics, and yet here she was pulling out lengths left right and centre gooing and gahhing at each one.
We sent our hubbies away for the day to do boys stuff and we started the day with keen anticipation and genuine excitement. The day gave me a rare opportunity to just sew for the fun of it. Normally I work on a new pattern design so I usually fuss a lot measuring and remeasuring and taking notes down as I work. But this day was different. I felt liberated and a bit of a rebel as I cut, sewed and cut some more. We had no patterns, only brief sketches of what we wanted to make. And yet we were very proud of our efforts.
In a single day with a chatty 3 year old playing at our feet we managed to make 3 notebook covers, a purse and two cushions.

The back is just a gorgeous as the front, don't you think?

Although I think the pace became a bit too much for my non sewing sister at times and she eventually crept away to the sanctuary of the kitchen to prepare the roast dinner for that evening.
This arrangement suited me perfectly as I continued to wizz along on the machine.

Here's the purse.

When my two daughters arrived home from school they too were keen to get in on the act and another small purse was made by my 15 year old for Miss Three. There was much heated discussion at times as piles of off cuts were "bagzed" for future projects.

I'm pleased to say that my creative spurge continued a few days later and a journal cover emerged for my eldest.

I love the detail strip we added to the inside with the little birdies peeking out.

And to her delight a small bag for my youngest also emerged.
Thankfully there were a few birds left over otherwise we could have had a mutiny on our hands.

I hope Kristen Doran would approve of our sewing day. We have her wonderfully inspiring fabrics to thank for it. There are two more cushions to come. Hopefully my sister will help me out with sharing those with you too. I think they have found pride of place on her bed.

Witch Doll Pattern for Halloween

Celebrate Halloween this year with Witchy Poo, a new witch doll pattern.

I found myself with a free afternoon last weekend. Hubby took the kids on an outing and the eldest daughter was visiting friends. When I looked around and discovered that the house was quiet and I was alone I knew a rare occasion had presented itself!

Of course there was heaps of the usual housework to get done but the thought of doing all that did nothing to lift my spirit. I soon concocted a plan to create a new design for Halloween and before long Witchy Poo had been sketched and I was up ending the fabric cupboard looking for the perfect fabrics. (I knew it wouldn't stay orderly for long!)

The good news is that I had her all sewn up within a few short hours. It's amazing how much sewing and creating you can get done when you are not interrupted. Once her long black hair was in place and her hat was firmly on her head, I sat her on the kitchen dresser for inspection when the kids arrived home.

As they returned home they discovered her one by one and expressed their approval. There were a few giggles at her big nose and trusty broomstick. My original design had included a cat although I had run out of steam that afternoon and decided not to make her. The kids on the other hand were not happy with my decision and so the next morning, to their delight, the little white cat appeared.

My new Witch doll pattern is one of 4 new Halloween designs currently showcased on the Stitching Cow website.

I had a wonderful afternoon of sewing and the housework was still there waiting for me the next day.

I was so inspired that I have started to sketch some ideas for Christmas.

My Fabric Cupboard

Every now and again all the mess and disarray finally gets to me and I just have to have a clean up.
When I find myself on a creative roll things seem to go everywhere and before long I have piles of fabric, pens, pencils, pieces of paper and threads scattered all around the house (I discover them in the most unlikely) places). I wonder at times how hubby puts up with me, but thankfully he never seems to mind and mutters every now and again with a cheeky smile"whatever make you happy!"
I was starting to think I had a bit of a problem.
Then a very special friend of mine invited me in to her creative space just recently.
We were at a barbecue together and the conversation turned to patchwork and quilting. Before long we were bouncing ideas off one another and discussing quilting projects. She beckoned me to walk across the road to her house so that she could share a quilt in the making. The visit from me was unexpected and before she opened the door she hesitated with a smile and laughed "don't mind the mess will you?"
As I entered I indeed smiled. Not at the mess but at the creativeness that was happening in every direction I looked. It was wonderful. There was half finished projects, bundles of fabric spilling over from every flat surface, pattern pages scattered, amazing books lining the book case and beyond, and in the middle of it all was her sewing machine.
I enjoyed every minute of being in her special space. And I am very thankful she shared it with me in the state it was in. It made me feel much more normal.
Which brings me to my fabric cupboard. I knew things were starting to get a little out of hand when I started to struggle closing the front door. It was also getting tricky to open. A bit like the dreaded Tupperware cupboard where things seem to topple out as if trying to escape.
And so I took matters in hand and spent some time folding stacking and folding some more until finally some sort of order was achieved.

The challenge is to see how long it stays in this state for. My guess is not very long but at least I have these picture to prove it was tidy once upon a time!

I came across these yummy embroidery threads just recently and had to have them.
They are so beautiful that I am not sure how I am ever going to bring myself to you them.
They currently take pride of place in their little box on top of my cupboard.

Hope I have inspired you to sort out your own fabric stash.
It's not all that bad really.
It's a wonderful opportunity to rediscover fabrics you forgot you had.
